Mother's Day is one of the most resounding celebrations of the year, and although this year it may be commemorated later, it is worth remembering why celebrating this day is important beyond the commercial sense that has been given to it in recent times.
The story is based in Ancient Greece, where every year believers worshiped Rhea, the mother of gods Zeus, Poseidon and Hades. Then the Romans took over the celebration and the Christians adapted it to honor Virgin Mary.
In the seventeenth century, the English had a Sunday celebration in which working moms rested, visited their families, and received gifts. By the 19th century, American activists Julia Ward Howe and Ann Jarvis began to organize demonstrations with mothers who were Civil War victims, where they talked about current affairs.
With the death of Ann Jarvis on May 9, 1905, her daughter Anna wanted to commemorate the date every second Sunday in May. In 1914, Jarvis managed to institutionalize the date to this day and is known as the founder of the Mother's Day celebration.
What we like about the origin and meaning of this date is that it celebrates the great power that women have to answer the question of how to be a mother and a professional at the same time. At Enel Colombia, we offer them benefits so that they can achieve this, thus balancing their family life.
Enel mothers can work remotely and have flexible hours, in addition to sharing special days with their families such as birthdays, first school day, etc. They have benefits specifically designed for mothers who prioritize the enjoyment of their personal life.
And now that we are living in a time in which so many challenges have been imposed on us, mothers must more than ever reconcile their role as mothers between home office and the normal and daily demands of their children.
A task with challanges that they are managing to overcome: combining schedules, meetings and professional projects with homework, food and family entertainment from home is not easy, but moms can do it all.
That is why today we tell Enel moms that we are with them, that we will continue on their side during this time and those to come, because for us they are the driving force that moves us to be a better company.
Happy Mother's day!
