Given the need and importance of building healthy environments for the population, the world is betting on the implementation of alternatives that protect the environment in a sustainable manner, and one of them is electric mobility and the benefits it offers.
Thanks to the investments that are making important automotive companies in the world, it is now a reality that electric vehicles can help us to combat the effects of climate change, and improve air quality; it is expected that by 2035 more than 10 million of these vehicles will be distributed around the world.
WHY USE AN ELECTRIC VEHICLE?
Currently in Colombia, transportation is responsible for 15% of CO2 emissions, and only in Bogotá, six million tons of CO2 are emitted per year, so the use of an electric vehicle would significantly reduce these figures. In addition, an electric motor can be six times more energy efficient than a combustion engine and open the door to new forms of business such as assembling electric vehicles, recharging them, recycling batteries, and the use of renewable energy.
In Enel - Codensa, an Enel Group Colombia company, since 2011 we have been working on the promotion of electric mobility in the country, as a means of transport so that people can move sustainably. As an important step in Bogotá, this year we have contributed to the implementation of the first 100% electric articulated bus within the mass transportation system of the city, meaning an improvement in the quality of life, mobility and public health of the citizens.
This bus, in its pilot version, transports more than 1,500 people each day and can travel about 320 kilometers with total autonomy; In addition, it can be recharged in a period of two to three hours and will stop emitting at least 50 tons of CO2 per year.
BENEFITS FOR THE ENVIRONMENT AND HEALTH
The use of electric vehicles brings great benefits for the conservation of the environment such as the reduction of CO2 emissions, the main cause of the greenhouse effect, and this in turn would prevent the rise of two degrees Celsius in the planet’s temperature. Likewise, electric vehicles will generate clean energy and allow it to be stored, which would mean an important step for the independence of fossil fuels.
The use of these vehicles will also significantly improve air quality, reducing respiratory diseases and noise contamination because electric motors do not generate any sound or environmental pollution.
COLOMBIA EACH TIME CLOSER TO SUSTAINABLE MOBILITY
Aligned with our commitment to promote electric mobility in the country, we participated in the 1st International Electric Mobility Meeting, where we emphasized that its incorporation in the country is not only a business strategy, but a commitment to innovation and sustainability that will be integrated in a harmonious and functional way to the dynamics of the cities, to add value to the energy system of the future.
The purpose of this event, carried out by the World Energy Council, is to promote electric mobility in Colombia from the pillars of energy security, equity and environmental sustainability, and share experiences with international experts to continue incorporating this type of alternatives in the lives of citizens.
At this moment, the Enel - Codensa network is ready to support 10 thousand recharging points, which would allow us to supply the energy for at least 500,000 electric vehicles, if these were integrated into the country's mobility.
“We want to transform cities into more sustainable places, and in this task electric mobility plays a fundamental role, which is why, along with the experience and efforts made in this area by the Enel Group in the world, we have been making important investments so that the massification of electric vehicles in our country is increasingly a reality”
– Lucio Rubio Díaz, General Director of Enel in Colombia
